While industry reports might suggest the market for e-reader devices is saturated, Tamblyn seems undeterred: he’s confident that the Glo HD, which at $129 is the cheapest e-reader on the market to boast a print-resolution screen, could find its way onto the bedside tables of dedicated print readers like me. They’ll also recommend a good book to get you started, hoping to ease the learning curve. You open the box, turn on the device and are welcome to call an associate and have an actual human being walk you through setting it up. To combat the unpleasant e-reading experiences wrought by this kind of idiocy, the Glo comes complete with the recommendation of a real Kobo staff member.
I’ve read two: a book of poetry from a PDF on my cumbersomely old first-generation iPad, and another e-book-only nonfiction work, which I printed out and read off of white copy paper. It helps, of course, if the first e-book one reads is gripping.Īt the conference, I joked with a friend about my own dismal experiences with e-books.
In an earlier phone interview, Tamblyn told me the impetus for the seven-day challenge grew out of the desire to help readers overcome a specific hurdle e-reading, he says, takes practice, and most people need two or three days to get the hang of it.
